Pura Terra Foundation

At Pura Terra Foundation, our focus is on protecting Earth’s natural resources and the rights of indigenous peoples. We work at the intersection of policy, strategy, and innovation.

Our Approach

Driven By Science and Economics

We believe in using science and data as the backbone of our work. We engage in, and support research and policy development, and encourage innovation and discovery that protects Earth’s resources and indigenous peoples. We also strive to find ways to make conservation economically valuable so that implementation can be achieved with minimal friction.

Our Programs

Oceans

Pura Terra is active in research that supports the health and sustainability of our ocean environments. Currently, we are focused on the protection of coral reefs and their denizens from the impacts of human activity and climate change. Coral reefs, while only a small part of the world’s oceans, are home to almost a third of all named marine species and serve as a primary natural defense against storm surges and flooding. Without healthy reefs, we cannot have a thriving and resilient planet.

Forests and Indigenous Cultures

Pura Terra Foundation is engaged in supporting and conducting forest related research, with the goal of helping to protect wildlife, promoting the benefits of forests to society, and protecting forest-dependent indigenous cultures. Forests cover approximately one third of the planet’s land mass and are home to the majority of land-based plants, animals, and insects. Forests also play a significant role in mitigating the consequences of climate change, providing water and food security for human populations, and buffering the impacts of severe floods and storms. We believe that forests are essential for a healthy planet and its inhabitants and are critical cultural resources.

Climate Change

Climate change profoundly impacts Earth’s resources and indigenous populations, so Pura Terra has engaged in programs to address this “umbrella issue.” We are working on developing strategies to accelerate the adoption of clean energy and to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, without polarization or politicization of the related issues. This includes identification of potential new business models for legacy energy infrastructure, providing advisory support to start-ups focused on climate change, and developing educational materials to help broaden global understanding. We believe that common ground can be found to solve Earth’s most pressing issues.
